Design a lamp for consumers at home

During this project we received the very broad assignment to design a lamp. With our team we decided to focus on a lamp that would raise awareness about its energy usage, which eventually resulted in Cygne. Cygne is a lamp that alters appearance based on how efficiently a user uses energy.

Research

In the first weeks, we decided to focus on creating a lamp that would use aesthetics to show users how energy efficient they are.

Aesthetic

By creating an aesthetic lamp, it can become a conversation starter and encouraging to be more efficient.

Education

Users often don't realize when they are using a lot of energy. With such a lamp this should be come more clear.

Sustainability

By making the lamp less aesthetic when too much energy is used, it can encourage people to behave better.

Concepts

Aesthetic

As explained, Cygne will transform based on the energy usage of the user. When energy usage is efficient Cygne's wings go up to create an aesthetic view. When too much energy is used, its wings will go down to create a more sad looking light.

Proof of Concept

Prototyping

To prove its concept in real-life a physical prototype was created. This prototype consisted of lasercut PMMA attached with connectors to a light tube.

Future steps

Embodiment and Durability

At the end of the project, one prototype was created and a detailed version of the lamp was ready. Because of the short time of this project, many more iterations should be made. These iterations should mainly focus on the support the PMMA and also doing more research into how light could be used to influence the user.
